Facebook Lite — Creation

Facebook Lite is the lightweight Android app built for low-end devices and slow networks, serving 100M+ users in emerging markets. I worked on the creation side — Feed Composer, Stories, Reels, and a series of stickers and tools that brought higher-bandwidth Meta surfaces to a constrained platform without breaking the experience for users who often were new to the internet.

The refreshed Lite Feed Composer — audience pill, screen header, prominent POST CTA, and a cleaner inline entry point.

Feed Composer Refresh

A holistic redesign of one of the most-used surfaces on Lite.

The Lite feed composer was outdated and hard to parse — the Post action wasn't clearly distinguished, there was no screen header, and the inline composer at the top of Feed showed a distracting availability badge (green dot). The refresh introduced an audience pill, a prominent blue POST CTA, a screen header, and a cleaned-up inline composer, along with scoped multi-media editing capabilities.

An earlier experiment had nearly caused a SEV: removing the bottom POST button left users unable to figure out how to post. That failure data shaped a deliberate, test-driven approach to the refresh. A parallel Composer CTA experiment was closed early after feedback from LDS — having two primary buttons leading to the same action on one screen violated guidelines. The takeaway: holistic redesign beats isolated growth hacks on shared components.

Reels on Lite

Bring a flagship Meta surface to the constrained platform that was excluded from it.

Reels had become a core surface across Meta. Lite did not support it. The work brought both consumption and creation to Lite, adapting the Reels architecture for low-bandwidth networks and low-end devices while preserving the core engagement loop. Built in partnership with the WebLite and Kite teams in TLV. One of the highest-impact Lite projects of H2 2021.

Stories on Lite

A creation toolkit assembled across many small launches.

  • Voice / Audio Sticker. Audio as an integrated part of the Lite Story experience — validated through XFN UXR in emerging markets where voice is a natural creation medium.
  • GIF Sprout. A lightweight GIF creation tool inside the Lite Feed Composer.
  • Mention Sticker. Tagging friends in Lite Stories to drive social engagement.
  • Question Sticker. Adapted to Lite alongside existing consumption-side designs.
  • Stories Mid Card. Mid-card experiences between Stories — music-themed variants and media nudge animations to encourage creation when new media was on device.
Process & system contributions

Standardize the small things across platforms.

The Cancel / Discard Bottomsheet project standardized a fragmented experience: iOS, FB4A, and Lite all showed different confirmation dialogs when users tapped back mid-creation. The work moved from a dialog to a bottomsheet and tested color variants for discard/keep CTAs — surfacing the insight that one emphasized color per sheet works better than three. Approved by FAST staff for cross-platform testing.

Alongside the product work, I established the FBLite Creation Figma team and an Asana-based design tracker — giving engineering, PM, and UXR open real-time access to design files rather than waiting for handoffs. A "What I Learned Designing for Creation on FB Lite" presentation synthesized two years of learnings on emerging-market constraints, mental models, and patterns that worked.
